사사기 16:21-31 (Judges 16:21-31)

21   블레셋 사람들이

그를 붙잡아 그의 눈을 빼고 끌고 가사에 내려가

놋 줄로 매고 그에게 옥에서 맷돌을 돌리게 하였더라

 
22   그의 머리털이 밀린 후에 다시 자라기 시작하니라

 
23   블레셋 사람의 방백들이 이르되

우리의 신이 우리 원수 삼손을 우리 손에 넘겨 주었다 하고

다 모여 그들의 신

다곤에게 큰 제사를 드리고 즐거워하고

24   백성들도 삼손을 보았으므로 이르되

우리의 땅을 망쳐 놓고 우리의 많은 사람을 죽인 원수를

우리의 신이 우리 손에 넘겨 주었다 하고

자기들의 신을 찬양하며

25   그들의 마음이 즐거울 때에 이르되

삼손을 불러다가 우리를 위하여 재주를 부리게 하자 하고

옥에서 삼손을 불러내매 삼손이 그들을 위하여 재주를 부리니라

그들이 삼손을 두 기둥 사이에 세웠더니

 
26   삼손이 자기 손을 붙든 소년에게 이르되

나에게 이 집을 버틴 기둥을 찾아

그것을 의지하게 하라 하니라

27   그 집에는 남녀가 가득하니

블레셋 모든 방백들도 거기에 있고

지붕에 있는 남녀도 삼천 명 가량이라

다 삼손이 재주 부리는 것을 보더라

28   삼손이 여호와께 부르짖어 이르되

주 여호와여 구하옵나니 나를 생각하옵소서

하나님이여 구하옵나니 이번만 나를 강하게 하사

나의 두 눈을 뺀 블레셋 사람에게 원수를 단번에 갚게 하옵소서 하고

 
29   삼손이 집을 버틴 두 기둥 가운데

하나는 왼손으로 하나는 오른손으로 껴 의지하고

30   삼손이 이르되

블레셋 사람과 함께 죽기를 원하노라 하고 힘을 다하여 몸을 굽히매

그 집이 곧 무너져 그 안에 있는 모든 방백들과 온 백성에게 덮이니

삼손이 죽을 때에 죽인 자가

살았을 때에 죽인 자보다 더욱 많았더라

31   그의 형제와 아버지의 온 집이 다 내려가서

그의 시체를 가지고 올라가서

소라와 에스다올 사이 그의 아버지 마노아의 장지에 장사하니라

삼손이 이스라엘의 사사로 이십 년 동안 지냈더라

 

21   The Philistines grabbed Samson

and poked out his eyes. They took him to the prison in Gaza

and chained him up. Then they put him to work,

turning a millstone to grind grain.

22   But they didn't cut his hair any more,

so it started growing back.

23   The Philistine rulers threw a big party

and sacrificed a lot of animals to their god Dagon.

The rulers said: Samson was our enemy,

but our god Dagon helped us capture him!

24-25   Everyone there was having a good time,

and they shouted,

"Bring out Samson--he's still good for a few more laughs!"
The rulers had Samson brought from the prison,

and when the people saw him,

this is how they praised their god:

Samson ruined our crops and killed our people.

He was our enemy,

but our god helped us capture him.
They made fun of Samson for a while,

then they told him to stand near

the columns that supported the roof.

26   A young man was leading Samson by the hand,

and Samson said to him, "I need to lean against something.

Take me over to the columns that hold up the roof."

 

27   The Philistine rulers were celebrating in a temple packed with people

and with three thousand more on the flat roof.

They had all been watching Samson

and making fun of him.

three thousand: Hebrew; some manuscripts of one ancient translation "seven hundred."

They. . . him: Samson may have been in a courtyard visible from the roof.

28   Samson prayed, "Please remember me,

LORD God. The Philistines poked out my eyes,

but make me strong one last time,

so I can take revenge for at least one of my eyes!"

one of my eyes: Or "my eyes."

29   Samson was standing between the two middle columns

that held up the roof.

He felt around and found one column with his right hand,

and the other with his left hand.

 
30   Then he shouted,

"Let me die with the Philistines!"

He pushed against the columns as hard as he could,

and the temple collapsed with the Philistine rulers

and everyone else still inside.

Samson killed more Philistines when he died

than he had killed during his entire life.

31   His brothers and the rest of his family went to Gaza

and took his body back home.

They buried him in his father's tomb,

which was located between Zorah and Eshtaol.
Samson was a leader of Israel for twenty years.
