마태복음 27:45-61 (Matthew 27:45-61)

45   제육시로부터

온 땅에 어둠이 임하여 제구시까지 계속되더니

46   제구시쯤에 예수께서 크게 소리 질러 이르시되

엘리 엘리 라마 사박다니 하시니 이는 곧 나의 하나님, 나의 하나님,

어찌하여 나를 버리셨나이까 하는 뜻이라

시 22:1

47   거기 섰던 자 중 어떤 이들이 듣고 이르되

이 사람이 엘리야를 부른다 하고

48   그 중의 한 사람이 곧 달려가서

해면을 가져다가 신 포도주에 적시어 갈대에 꿰어 마시게 하거늘

49   그 남은 사람들이 이르되

가만 두라 엘리야가 와서 그를 구원하나 보자 하더라

어떤 사본에, 49절 끝에 요 19:34와 같은 말이 있음

50   예수께서 다시 크게 소리 지르시고 영혼이 떠나시니라

51   이에 성소 휘장이 위로부터 아래까지 찢어져 둘이 되고

 땅이 진동하며 바위가 터지고

52   무덤들이 열리며 자던 성도의 몸이 많이 일어나되

53   예수의 부활 후에 그들이 무덤에서 나와서

거룩한 성에 들어가 많은 사람에게 보이니라

54   백부장과 및 함께 예수를 지키던 자들이

지진과 그 일어난 일들을 보고 심히 두려워하여 이르되

이는 진실로 하나님의 아들이었도다 하더라

55   예수를 섬기며 갈릴리에서부터 따라온 많은 여자가 거기 있어

멀리서 바라보고 있으니

56   그 중에는 막달라 마리아와 또 야고보와 요셉의 어머니 마리아와

또 세베대의 아들들의 어머니도 있더라

 
57   저물었을 때에

아리마대의 부자 요셉이라 하는 사람이 왔으니 그도 예수의 제자라

58   빌라도에게 가서 예수의 시체를 달라 하니

이에 빌라도가 내주라 명령하거늘

59   요셉이 시체를 가져다가 깨끗한 세마포로 싸서

60   바위 속에 판 자기 새 무덤에 넣어 두고

큰 돌을 굴려 무덤 문에 놓고 가니

61   거기 막달라 마리아와 다른 마리아가

무덤을 향하여 앉았더라

45   At noon the sky turned dark

and stayed that way until three o'clock.

46   Then about that time Jesus shouted,

"Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" which means, "My God,

my God, why have you deserted me?"

Eli. . . sabachthani: These words are in Hebrew.

47   Some of the people standing there heard Jesus and said,

"He's calling for Elijah." 

Elijah: In Aramaic the name "Elijah" sounds like "Eli," which means "my God."

48   One of them at once ran and grabbed a sponge.

He soaked it in wine,

 then put it on a stick and held it up to Jesus.

49   Others said,

"Wait! Let's see if Elijah will come and save him."

Elijah will come: See the note at 16.14.

50   Once again Jesus shouted, and then he died.

 

51   At once the curtain in the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

The earth shook, and rocks split apart.

curtain in the temple: There were two curtains in the temple. one was at the entrance, and the other separated the holy place from the most holy place that the Jewish people thought of as God's home on earth. The second curtain is probably the one that is meant.

52   Graves opened,

and many of God's people were raised to life.

53   Then after Jesus had risen to life,

they came out of their graves and went into the holy city,

where they were seen by many people.

54   The officer and the soldiers guarding Jesus felt the earthquake

and saw everything else that happened.

They were frightened and said,

"This man really was God's Son!"

55   Many women had come with Jesus from Galilee to be of help to him,

and they were there, looking on at a distance.

 

56   Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph,

and the mother of James

and John were some of these women.

of James and John: The Greek text has "of Zebedee's sons" (see 26.37).

57   That evening a rich disciple named Joseph

from the town of Arimathea

58   went and asked for Jesus' body.

Pilate gave orders for it to be given to Joseph,

 
59   who took the body

and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth.

60   Then Joseph put the body in his own tomb

that had been cut into solid rock and had never been used.

He rolled a big stone against the entrance to the tomb

and went away.

tomb. . . solid rock: Some of the Jewish people buried their dead in rooms carved into solid rock. A heavy stone was rolled against the entrance.

61   All this time Mary Magdalene

and the other Mary were sitting across from the tomb.
