민수기 13:25-33 (Numbers 13:25-33)

25   사십 일 동안 땅을 정탐하기를 마치고 돌아와

26   바란 광야 가데스에 이르러

모세와 아론과 이스라엘 자손의 온 회중에게 나아와

그들에게 보고하고 그 땅의 과일을 보이고

27   모세에게 말하여 이르되

당신이 우리를 보낸 땅에 간즉 과연 그 땅에 젖과 꿀이 흐르는데

이것은 그 땅의 과일이니이다

28   그러나 그 땅 거주민은 강하고

성읍은 견고하고 심히 클 뿐 아니라 거기서 아낙 자손을 보았으며

 
29   아말렉인은 남방 땅에 거주하고

헷인과 여부스인과 아모리인은 산지에 거주하고

가나안인은 해변과 요단 가에 거주하더이다

30   갈렙이 모세 앞에서 백성을 조용하게 하고 이르되

우리가 곧 올라가서 그 땅을 취하자 능히 이기리라 하나

 
31   그와 함께 올라갔던 사람들은 이르되

우리는 능히 올라가서 그 백성을 치지 못하리라

그들은 우리보다 강하니라 하고

 
32   이스라엘 자손 앞에서

그 정탐한 땅을 악평하여 이르되 우리가 두루 다니며 정탐한 땅은

그 거주민을 삼키는 땅이요

거기서 본 모든 백성은 신장이 장대한 자들이며

 

33   거기서 네피림 후손인 아낙 자손의 거인들을 보았나니

우리는 스스로 보기에도 메뚜기 같으니

그들이 보기에도 그와 같았을 것이니라

히, '네피림'

25   After exploring the land of Canaan forty days,

26   the twelve men returned to Kadesh in the Paran Desert

and told Moses, Aaron, and the people what they had seen.

They showed them the fruit

27   and said: Look at this fruit!

The land we explored is rich with milk and honey.

28   But the people who live there are strong,

and their cities are large and walled.

We even saw the three Anakim clans.

Anakim: See the note at verse 22.

29   Besides that, the Amalekites live in the Southern Desert;

the Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites are in the hill country;

and the Canaanites live along the Mediterranean Sea

and the Jordan River.

Amalekites. . . Hittites. . . Jebusites. . . Amorites. . . Canaanites: These people lived in Canaan before the Israelites.

30   Caleb calmed down the crowd and said,

"Let's go and take the land. I know we can do it!"

 
31   But the other men replied,

"Those people are much too strong for us."

32   Then they started spreading rumors and saying,

"We won't be able to grow anything in that soil.

And the people are like giants.

 
33   In fact,

we saw the Nephilim who are the ancestors of the Anakim.

They were so big that we felt as small as grasshoppers."
